[Hank Gilbert (D-Whitehouse), candidate for Commissioner of Agriculture, sent out this update on this week's activities in his campaign]
This week I have been up in the Panhandle and West Texas where many Texans are sharing their concerns about the National Animal Identification System (NAIS). We are working diligently to inform the public about the proposed mandatory Premises ID System created by the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC).
If these regulations are adopted, the State of Texas will require every owner of even one horse, cow, chicken, pig, goat, sheep, exotic animal or virtually any livestock animal, to register in a government database and subject their property, homes and animals to state and federal surveillance.
Thank you for the gas money! We have raised almost $2,500.00 this week and I appreciate every dollar. I still have miles to go before I sleep, so don’t put your wallets back in your pocket yet.
While I have been driving across our state, I’ve had a lot of time to think about what I want for Texas, not just today, but in the next twenty years for my children.
I want to live in a Texas that is looked up to and respected around the country.
It is a Texas where working people and businesses thrive in a competitive and fair marketplace.
It is a Texas where our policies reflect our pride in the blessings of a beautiful and abundant land and our commitment to preserve that land for our farmers, our sportsmen and women.
I want to live in a Texas where we value work as well as wealth. I believe in a Texas with big ideas, with the courage and backbone to translate those ideas into workable policies. That is why I continue to attend as many Trans-Texas Corridor meetings possible and speak for those who have started to feel they have no voice.
These challenges should not frighten us, but they should call us to action. We are the leaders we have been waiting for. Join me in this effort. It’s time for us to lead.
Sincerely,
Hank
