MEDIA ADVISORY: Reps. Gonzalez And Cuellar Stand Up For Cuts Against Student Loans

[Media Advisory from U.S. Congressmen Charlie Gonzalez (D-San Antonio), TX-CD-20; and Henry Cuellar (D-Laredo), TX-CD-28].
On Monday morning, Representatives Charlie Gonzalez and Henry Cuellar will hold a press conference at St. Mary’s University to discuss the cuts in student loan funding the Republican controlled Congress enacted this year. The $12 billion in funding cuts will push up interest rates from 7.9% to 8.5% on student loans for parents and students. As a result of this provision and others, the typical student borrower who has $17,500 in loans can see upwards to an additional $5,000 for their education.
“We should make college more affordable and not more expensive,†Congressman Gonzalez. “Graduation is the time of year when seniors should celebrate their academic achievements instead of worrying how they will repay their loans. It is inconceivable to me that the Republican controlled Congress is essentially making it more difficult for students and parents to pay for a college education, a credential that has become crucial in the 21st Century economy. Education is the surest way to improve our community, our state and our nation. It is vital that we keep higher education affordable otherwise the dream of college will be a reality only for the well off.”
“As a member of the House Budget Committee, I appreciate the Administration’s efforts to balance the budget. However, this cannot be done by slashing education funding, the backbone of our country’s competitive edge and our economic future,†added Congressman Cuellar. “I will continue to fight for a budget that restores fiscal responsibility and brings real solutions to the American people including consistent financial support for American higher education. We cannot deny Americans these fundamental educational opportunities any longer, Congressman Cuellar said.â€
