[Press Release from Congressman Nick Lampson (D-Stafford)]

Congressman Nick Lampson (D-Stafford) today offered an
amendment to legislation being considered by the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee which will provide much needed federal assistance to areas affected by
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The amendment offered by Congressman Lampson will ensure that Texas communities receive the same type of federal assistance as those similarly affected in Mississippi and Louisiana. H.R. 1144, the Hurricanes Katrina and Rita Federal Match Relief Act of 2007, waives the 25 percent local funding match required under the Stafford Act and cancels the required repayment of Community Disaster Loans for Louisiana and Mississippi. The Lampson amendment, passed unanimously through the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, will allow Texas communities to qualify for disaster assistance programs, providing a savings to the State of Texas totaling upwards of $70 million.
