[Statement From House Democratic Leader Jim Dunnam (D-Waco)]

House Democratic Leader Jim Dunnam (D-Waco) issued the following statement today regarding HB2 and SJR13, both of which passed the House today:

“Thanks to House Democrats, today is a good day for senior citizens in Texas. House Democrats insisted that seniors not be held hostage to busting the state spending cap and
receive the property tax relief they were denied last year. By separating the seniors from the divisive and controversial issue of busting the state spending cap, we saved the senior
tax cut.
“In addition, Democrats proposed legislation to triple the homestead exemption to provide average Texas homeowners with better, more effective property tax relief, increase teacher pay to near the national average, and to fund needed textbook purchases for schools. Unfortunately Republicans opposed those efforts and voted down our attempts to prioritize improving our schools.”
