[Press Release from Glen Melancon (D), Candidate for Congress, TX-CD-04]

“Now’s the time for a bold, new energy policy,” said Glenn Melancon, Democratic candidate for Congress.  “When elected to Congress, I will demand an ‘Apollo’ type energy project.  Just as John F. Kennedy called for putting a man on the moon in ten years, I will fight to end America’s addiction to foreign oil in ten years,” Melancon said.

Melancon made his comments after gas prices reached near record highs.   Adjusted for inflation, regular gas prices approached the price that brought the United States’ economy to its knees in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

“Last year Dick Cheney, Ralph Hall and oil executives teamed up to pass an energy bill.  We now know they failed to solve the problem,” Melancon said.  “After giving huge tax cuts and subsidies to big oil companies, they turned around and kicked Texas families in the gut. That has to stop!  Corporate greed doesn’t value families,” Melancon said.

Melancon wants Congress to stop spending $200 billion dollars a year in Iraq and giving huge tax breaks to subsidize big oil.  He plans to introduce legislation that redirects those resources to American universities and research facilities.  He believes it is critical to find alternative energy sources and conversation technologies.

“Texas families need a twenty-first century energy policy that works for them, not big oil.  Working families need a Congressman who understands their needs and fights for them. Neither the big oil companies nor their friends like Ralph Hall and Dick Cheney will solve this crucial problem.  They are the problem,” Melancon said.

“We the people of the United States need a bold, new direction.  When Americans have big dream, they can reach the moon,” Melancon said

Glenn Melancon of Sherman is the Democratic candidate in Texas’ 4th Congressional District. The district includes Bowie, Camp, Cass, Collin, Delta, Fannin, Franklin, Grayson, Hopkins, Hunt, Lamar, Morris, Rains, Red River, Rockwall and Titus counties.
